Powder Metallurgy Material Application
Brake pads, clutch friction plates, loose-pore filters, porous sweating materials, oil-containing bearings, magnetic cores, electrical contacts, high-density alloys, cemented carbides and super-hard wear-resistant parts on aircraft engines cannot be manufactured using ordinary casting and forging processes because they contain a large amount of non-metallic components or interconnected pores. They can only be manufactured using powder metallurgy processes such as cold pressing and sintering with powder as raw materials.
The more important powder metallurgy materials used in the aerospace industry are brake pad materials, loose-pore materials and high-strength powder alloys.
Brake Pads
Brake pads are the core of aircraft wheel brakes. Modern aircraft have a landing speed of more than 200 km/h, and the brake load is very large. The instantaneous temperature of the brake pad surface can reach 800-1000°C, and adhesion is not allowed to occur, so as to avoid tire burst due to brake failure. Powder metallurgy brake pads made of iron powder or copper powder as the main component and non-metallic powders for friction and adhesion prevention can meet this requirement.
Most military and civilian aircraft use powder metallurgy brake pads. Because wear occurs every time you brake, the brake pads need to be replaced after 100-500 times, so it is the most used powder metallurgy material part on the aircraft. Powder metallurgy materials.
Loose Hole
Porous permeable powder metallurgy materials. Bronze or stainless steel filters used in turbine engine lubrication systems and aircraft hydraulic control systems are important components to prevent particle blockage and stagnation. Metal fiber loose hole materials have good strength and plasticity and can be used in high-temperature parts, such as high-temperature alloy felt belts for turbojet engine tip seal rings and rocket engine injector panels, combustion chamber inner walls and throat sweating cooling loose hole materials.
Alloys
Fully dense high-temperature alloys, aluminum alloys and titanium alloys formed by powder hot forming.
Some modern aircraft engines have used forged powder high-temperature alloy turbine disks and compressor disks. In order to save raw materials and save the forging process, hot isostatic pressing precision forming can also be performed directly. Dispersion-strengthened high-temperature alloys and rapidly solidified powder high-temperature alloys made by mechanical alloying methods can exceed the strength of directional solidification alloys above 1000-1050°C, and are good materials for making guide blades and turbine blades. Powder aluminum alloys are mainly used as aircraft and engine structural materials.
The strength of mechanically alloyed aluminum alloys and rapidly solidified powder aluminum alloys can reach 700 MPa (about 70 kgf/mm). The specific strength reaches the level of titanium alloys and ultra-high strength steels, and the operating temperature can reach 250-300°C, which expands the application range of existing aluminum alloys. Rapidly solidified aluminum-lithium alloys have a specific stiffness 30% higher than deformed aluminum alloys and a specific strength twice as high. If they replace aluminum alloys, the weight of aircraft can be reduced by more than 30%.
